The Bishop’s Candlesticks (3 marks) :
Q1. "We shall have nothing left. " - Why does the speaker say this?
Ans. Persome was shocked when she heard that the Bishop had sold the silver salt cellars to pay the house rent for Mere Gringoire. The Bishop has given away almost everything to the poor. Persome did not like the Bishop's reckless charity. So she said this.

Q2. Why was the convict sent to the prison?
Ans. The convict once lived happily with his wife in a cottage. But in a bad year he became workless. He was then forced to steal to buy food for his dying wife. But he was caught red-handed and sent to the prison for ten years.

Q3. How did the convict become a number?
A. Before his imprisonment the convict was a man with all human qualities. But the prison authority refused to regard him as a human being. They did not call him by his name. They called him by a number, 15728. It was the custom of the prison.

Q4. "I led him into temptation."--How did the speaker lead 'him' into temptation?
Ans. The candlesticks were made of silver. They were worthy too. The Bishop left those precious things with the convict alone and roused the temptation of the convict to steal them. Thus he led him into temptation.

Q5. Why did the Bishop tell a lie to the Sergeant?
Ans. Though the convict stole the Bishop's candlesticks, the Bishop saved him from being arrested again. The Bishop did not want to throw him into hell. He wanted to convert him into a good human being. So he told a lie to the Sergeant.

Q6. "I was free, free to starve."
What does the speaker mean to say here?
Ans. In the prison the convict was given food regularly. But when he came out of the jail, he had to starve because he had no job. He could not even beg as he was always in fear of police. So he had to starve.

Q7. Why does the Bishop consider the loss of his candlesticks to be his 'just punishment'?
Ans. As a pious Christian the Bishop should not have attraction for any earthly thing. But he shows much attachment to the candlesticks. So he thinks that it is a great sin and God has punished him for this attachment.

Q8."They are sold, madam"
What does the word 'they' refer to and why are they sold?
Ans. The word 'they' refers to the silver salt cellars.
The Bishop wanted to help Mere Gringoire who was too poor to pay her house rent. She sought the Bishop’s help. But the Bishop had no money with him. So he had to sell the salt cellars.

Q9. Why did the convict want to steal the candlesticks?
Ans. After escaping from the prison, the convict has not yet found any honest means to earn his livelihood. He thinks that the candlesticks may be of costly material. If he can sell the candlesticks, he may start a new life with the money. So he wanted to steal the candlesticks.

Q10. Which path to Paris did the Bishop advise the Convict to take and why?
Ans. The Bishop advised the Convict to take the path through the woods at the back of his cottage.
He advised to take such lonely path because the gendarmes did not patrol there at night.

                                                 Sub. The importance of afforestation

Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily I would like to ventilate my opinion about the importance of planting more trees.
Unplanned urbanisation and indiscriminate felling of trees have destroyed the green cover of the earth and have made it what it is today − ‘a jungle of concrete’. This has posed a great threat to the environment and to our very existence. Trees play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance and the way deforestation is going on at present, will have fatal consequences on ecology and the environment. Already we have started to feel the conditions throughout the world, frequent occurrence of natural calamities, changes in the cycle of seasons, global warming, rising pollution − all these are directly or indirectly related to this large scale felling of trees. It is high time that we take up afforestation programmes on a large scale to repair the damage that has already been done.
Therefore, I request you to create awareness among the masses through your editorial column.
   Thanking you.
                                                                                                                                Yours faithfully,

Dear Haripada,
I received your letter a few days ago. I enjoyed your letter very much. I have shown it to some of my classmates. They loved your style of presenting your topic in the letter. In this letter, I will give you a brief description of a famous festival of our state, West Bengal.
West Bengal is better known as ‘a land of festivals’. There are uncountable festivals since people of so many religions live here. The Durga Puja is the greatest Bengali festival. It is called the
festival of the masses. It is celebrated for four days in the season of autumn. It brings a lot of joy to the people. The whole family gets together to celebrate the re-union and thus it strengthens the social bond. Everybody makes preparation in advance to meet the expenses involved in the festival. The new clothes, sweets, parties are some of the special things associated with the festival. Every house serves delicious dishes to welcome the friends and relatives during the occasion. I like puja the most since it’s the festival when the members of our family stay together for a few days and have a good time.
I hope, you have got a fair idea of the festival. Please plan for a visit to our place in this puja to have a thrilling experience. No more today. Awaiting your reply.
Yours lovingly,

Saraswati Puja Celebration
By Haridas Pal

Sarenga, Feb.14 : A programme regarding Saraswati Puja in our school was celebrated with solemnity and grandeur on 31st January this year. All the students and teachers gathered at the school premises to celebrate the day. Students of class XI decorated the puja pandal with creative and artistic outlook. The school building was also decorated with colourful papers. The idol of Devi Saraswati was beautifully personified. The total atmosphere was changed with endless spirit and we enjoyed a lot. The most exciting dishes that we have in this pious occasion are hotchpotch, vegetable curries and sweets. A short cultural programme was held in the evening. The function began with Rabindra Sangeet. Different cultural items like recitation, dances, quiz etc. were performed by our students with great enthusiasm. An exhibition was also held in our school premises organized by our students. Really it was an excellent day to enjoy.

Sub: Banning of plastic carry bags.
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily I would like to express my deep concern over the excessive use of plastic bags.
The recent flood in Kolkata due to water-logging caused by polythene or plastic bags has raised a hue and cry in the society. Plastic bags are undoubtedly a cheap and convenient medium of carrying almost all kinds of goods. But they are non-biodegradable. Hence, they are not at all eco-friendly. Moreover, the burning of these polythene articles emits noxious gases polluting the atmosphere. The toxic gas emitted is dangerous for children. We have to minimize the use of plastic bags and replace them by jute or paper bags. However, the use of plastic below 40 micron may be permissible. The Government should come forward to enforce strict laws regarding its prohibition.
Therefore, I request you to create mass awareness through your editorial column.
   Thanking you.
Yours faithfully,
Amal Kanti Ray

Sub. Difficulties due to water logging in our locality

Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily I, a resident of Sarenga, would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned to the untold sufferings of the people of our locality because of water-logging in the rainy season.
In absence of any modern drainage system even a short spell of shower is enough to cause water logging in the area. As most of the drains are clogged with plastics, drains easily overflow and remain stagnant for days. Mosquitoes find a happy breeding-ground in the stagnant water and diseases like Malaria and Dengue are so very common. Residents have to live in an unhygienic condition during the entire rainy season. The school-going children and office-goers have to wade through knee-deep water and passing vehicles often splash dirty water upon the pedestrians. Repeated appeals to the B.D.O. have fallen to the deaf ears.
Therefore, the government should take some measures to alleviate the suffering of the people of our locality. Thanking you.
Yours faithfully,
Neel Mukherjee

Dear Anil,
Why are you silent for such a long time? Are you busy with your studies? I do advise you not to be book worm but to be acquainted with the current affairs and world-wide news. In this matter newspaper will be helpful to you. Reading newspaper is really a good habit.
Without newspaper, we’ll lose touch with the modern world. Newspapers offer us the news of events of home and abroad, reports of politics, sports and other activities. It plays a great role in educating people. You’ll realize that all the records of your General Knowledge book come from the one and only source – the newspapers. The political discussions that mum and dad can enjoy with their friends and relatives come from the newspapers. Nowadays, I find myself updated with the sports news having started the practice of reading it. Believe me, it has enriched my vocabulary a lot recently. We too can chat over many issues in the newspapers.
How’s mom’s burnt forefinger now? Hope dad has changed his spectacles. I’m really missing you. Lots of love to you and regards to mum and dad.
Waiting for a sweet short reply.
Yours lovingly,
Mukesh Ambani

8. Write a letter to your friend about a book you have recently read.                                            10

26th January,2019

Dear Anjan,
I have received your letter today. Thanks a lot for your sweet letter. It is a great pleasure to state my experience of reading a book which I have recently read.
It is  Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhya's ‘Pather Panchali’. This novel is indeed a classic in Bengali literature. The hardship, the joys and sorrows of a lower middle class family in the countryside are vividly described in the novel. The story centres round the poor family of Harihar Roy and his wife Sarbajaya, their son and daughter, Apu and Durga who lives in a backward village named Nischindipur. It shows the social condition in which Apu is born and brought up with constant struggle. But it is not the plot itself, but deep insight into human character, which have attracted me most. Special mention must also be made of the author’s love for nature. By the magic touch of the pen of Bibhutibhusan, nature seems to be living. We can almost smell the flowers in the woods and visualize the rural life. It impresses me much.
Best regards to your parents and love to you. No more today. Awaiting your reply.
Your loving friend,
Suman Chatterjee
